Mostar Reunion

by Emiel Elgersma on July 17th, 2006

“I found a nice lady”, Paolo yells at me at the other side of the door. I am surprised; he only went out for 2 hours in Mostar. I unlock the door, because I was having a nap, and see to my surprise Mathias. Not a nice dark haired Bosnian lady, but a tall German guy which was also taking part of AEGEE election observations mission in Macedonia. What a coincidence: after Skopje he left to Belgrade, we for Pristina. Now Paolo just walks into him in the old center of Mostar.

Together we go to see the old city center. Famous of the bridge, which was destroyed in 1995 during the war, and now rebuild. We walk the old streets filled with souvenir shops in houses of wood and stones. Have some burek and Bosnian coffee on a terrace and enjoy the city.

Mathias doesn’t know when he will leave. His original plan was to take a bus at 1 o’clock at night to Dubrovnik. But maybe it’s better to go this morning and sleep on his mattress in our room. Not a problem for us, but maybe for the landlord. We decide to go out tonight, come back home around one, sneak in and let Mathias sneak out again tomorrow morning.

The plan works, although the lady saw Mathias. Maybe she thought it was me, or she just didn’t care. Anyway, at 6:30 he leaves the room and get off. We continue our sleeping and wake up around nine thirty to see more of the city. This time not the reconstructed old center, but the just outside of it.
