Libanon: what’s going on!

by Emiel Elgersma on July 14th, 2006

We were having a drink with a Dutch woman in the center of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She works in the city for a NGO and was boardmember of AEGEE-Utrecht in 1999-2000. She just stood up and walk to a guy passing by.

He went to Sarajevo for a conference. Now he wanted to go back to his hometown, but couldn’t. The airport was bombed! The man is living in Beiroet, Libanon. But now he is a ˝refugee in Bosnia˝.

I was just checking my email and there was an email from Vrij Nederland, a Dutch left wing weekly. Abdelkader Benali is reporting what is going on in the city in his weblog.

One thing that striked me where the following phrases. ˝I’m woken today by the noize of Israelian fighters. It is the noize I have read about in books about the cival war in Libanon and the Kosovo war, but now I hear them for the first time for real.˝

It’s unbelievble how much demage bombings create. We see some images on tv from high up the air destroying a building. But the last week I have seen those buildings. In Pristina, Mitrovica, Mostar, Sarajevo. They are just the same as I see now on the pictures from Reuters and AFP. It’s hard to understand what’s like living there in these times. But the weblog of Abdelkader gives a good impression.
