Dubrovnik room hunting

by Emiel Elgersma on July 13th, 2006

A beautiful coast road brings us to Dubrovnik, in the south of Croatia. We go from bay to bay, lovely beaches and a turquoise sea we see. It’s just like those commercials you see on television.

A crowd of old women and men runs to the bus. ˝You want room˝, they all ask while showing some pictures of their houses. We need some accommodation so we ask for a price. 200 Kuna. ˝In Euro˝, we ask because we have no idea of the official exchange rate. We walk around and listen a few time to the same story. ˝Beautiful view.˝ ˝Nice Room.˝ ˝Only ten minutes walking to the old city and seven to the beach.˝ (The actual numbers differenced now and then). They show some nice pictures, give the location on the map and ask too much money.

We only want to spend 25 euro maximum for the room. So we start to bargain. ˝No, to much… 10 euro a person˝ ˝No No No˝, the woman answers. We make up some story of a friend with a room of 10 euro and walk away. Directly the woman runs after us and says: Twelve euro˝. We continue our search and after 20 minutes we have a nice room.

A fat woman, around sixty walks us to a spot and calls her husband to pick us up. He brings us to the apartment and shows us the room. It looks all right, but there is only a double bed. We try to get an other room, but it’s full. OK, we agree to take this room. The bed is big enough, two single person mattresses, and we don’t want to do it all over again.

  1. Hey avonturier!

    just keep walking

    ey joris,

    Emiel
